I don't know about your class this year, but my students need some major help in the math facts department! Our new Math series doesn't focus on facts at all and it is holding them up BIG TIME! I have never had so many kiddos with number lines and touch math lines taped to their desks. For one student it is like pulling teeth to get an answer to 8 + 1! I knew I had to do something! It hit me one day while I was having a quiet moment in my classroom. It is amazing what your brain can do when there aren't 24 little voices whispering, pencils tapping, and noise making! My neighbor recently had brought over a Don't Break the Ice game for my son and we already had one. I brought it to school, but I was thinking that the game was a little juvenile for them. That is when it hit me that I could turn it into something educational. That is when I thought of math facts. The rest as they say is history!
So I finally got all of the pieces made and cut out. Now was time to "test" it on my students. The game was an INSTANT hit! They were all clamoring to play it. My first thought was I need to go buy more game boards and I still may. All day today they kept asking me if they could play. It was awesome! Nothing makes me happier than seeing them excited about learning!
I am going to give them some time with the addition facts and then I am going to give them a separate set of subtraction fact cards. They should know their facts in no time! Thank goodness! Now if only I had thought of it sooner!
